October Newsletter

Last week LAWA hosted a Latin American themed lunch for their fellow tenants and supporters. The menu was wonderful, and the LAWA team including Thali, Belen, Annais, Yuliana, Karina & Paula prepared and served beautiful food.

Angie and Annais spoke about LAWA’s 35 year history – 25 years at Bootstrap – and the importance of food in their  culture as a way to show love and care. I think we all recognise this.

International Day of Charity

We hosted afternoon tea for our charity tenants to celebrate World Charity Day. We have Charities, Community Interest Companies, Social Enterprises, and purpose driven businesses in the Bootstrap family. It looked like everyone turned up, and gave some time to explain their work and motivation. We served sandwiches and scones.

TDK Youth Fundraiser

The Roofpark hosted Dusty Knuckle’s 10th Birthday Party and Fundraiser. It was an action packed affair – Big Zuu and Ashley Walters joined trainees in raising awareness (and funds) for the Dusty Knuckle Youth Training Programme. Other special guests included a back-to-back headline set by Rudimental and DJ Target; with food by Ixta Belfrage, Gillett Square’s Ewarts Jerk, and Gwada Kitchen from Balls Pond Road. A run of limited edition t-shirts from the night will be available on their website soon.

Idia’s Community Kitchen

We have found a home for Idia’s Community Kitchen. It is a local charity that offers hot meals and food for the people of Hackney. Ania, who set up the charity, is a beautiful force of nature – all she wants to do is help people, and she does this with food to show care and compassion. It is worth making time to hear her story; it will move you.

We are hosting the kitchen in reception 2 evenings a week, and on Sunday afternoons. Dusty Knuckle has long supported their work with bread and donations.

As they settle in we will come to you to see how we can all help their work.

Eat Club

Eat Club looks to empower young Londoners to become confident, resilient individuals who can make a positive impact in their communities. They do this by sharing the skills to cook nutritious meals and the joy of eating together, fostering independence and healthy habits for life.

They run supper clubs and food events with young people. We have already discussed running a few of these for you, and see how else we can support their work. They also work with Dusty Knuckle’s youth programme. In the last year they have supported 3,000 young Londoners to learn to cook.

Bootstrap Charity is a workspace and business-led charity that promotes responsible business as a way to address inequality in Hackney.
